Program
MPEI sells 14-watt CFLs which have the same light output as 60-watt incandescent bulb. MPEI also sells 20-watt (75-watt equivalents) and 23-watt (100-watt equivalents). Facts about CFLs:

  • CFLs use 75 percent less energy than standard bulbs
  • CFLs last up to 9,000 hours
  • CFLs usually pay for themselves in about 7 months and then save you money thereafter. In otherwords, you will pay more for a CFL, but in seven months (based on an average usage of 4 hours per day) you save enough energy to compensate for the higher purchase price.

3.162 MW

If all CFLs sold were installed, 3.162 megawatts were not added to (or conserved if retrofitted) MPEI's system. MPEI pays Tri-State a $21.50 demand charge per kW on its power bill. CFL sales reduce MPEI's purchased power cost, helping MPEI provide affordable rates for its members now and in the future.

Why CFLs are Good for Consumers
They reduce lighting costs and electric consumption by about 75 percent .

Why CFLs are Good for MPEI
They reduce the demand charge on MPEI's Tri-State power bill, which is getting more expensive.
