The 2007 National Rural Electric Youth Tour and Colorado Electric Educational Institute Youth Leadership Camp contest offers an all-expense paid trip for two junior high school students attending schools in our service territory.

First Place Winner will win a trip to the 2007 Youth Tour providing a seven-day adventure that offers in-depth exposure into the electric cooperative network while exploring our nation’s capital. Expenses, including airfare, lodging, meals, and all admission fees are paid by Mountain Parks Electric, Inc.

Students will come away with not only a better understanding of their state and national governments, but also experience a better understanding of the sponsoring organizations and cooperatives.

Places to go…People to See…Things to Do….

Schedules vary from year to year but here’s a sampling from past Youth Tours:

Visit to Tri-State Generation & Transmission headquarters (the wholesale supplier for MPEI), U.S. Capitol, Colorado State Capitol, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Mount Vernon, National Archives, Vietnam Veterans Ware Memorial, National Holocaust Memorial, The Old Post Office Pavilion, The White House, Potomac Dinner & Dance Cruise, NRECA Town Hall Meeting, Sunset Parade at Iwo Jima Memorial, Visit with Colorado’s U.S. Senators, Visit with Colorado’s U.S. Representatives, FDR Memorial, Smithsonian Museums and the opportunity to meet and connect with students from all across the nation while experiencing a week you will never forget

When: The 2007 Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. will take place June 7-14, 2007

Second place winner will have an all-expense paid weeklong trip to the Youth Leadership Camp just outside of Steamboat Springs in Clark, Colorado on July 15-20, 2007. The Youth Leadership Camp is sponsored by the Colorado Electric Educational Institute. The camp activities include a gondola ride to the top of the ski area, a tour of the Craig coal mine and electric generation plant, leadership skills, safety demonstrations, barbecues, dances and a banquet to celebrate this “life changing experience.” Students will form their own cooperative and have the opportunity to learn more about government, the electric industry, current issues and leadership.

It’s a win- win opportunity--no matter how you look at it! (Adult chaperones accompany the students and facilitate all activities during the weeklong adventures).

Who is eligible?

  • A student must currently be a junior in high school and must be at least 16 years of age by January 1, 2007.
  • You must attend a high school in our service territory
  • You must live in a household that receives electricity from Mountain Parks Electric, Inc.

If you meet these requirements, here’s how to enter:
