One of the most unusual winter recreation events in Colorado will take place on January 27 in Walden when the Jackson County Lions Club sponsors its annual golf tournament on the ice of Walden Reservoir.

The 2007 tournament will be the fifth time the club has run the tournament and it has grown every year. Last year 25 threesomes participated in the tournament. They competed for cash prizes and trophies for best score, worst score and most unfortunate golfer (it went one year to a man who broke through the ice, but fortunately not too far).

Having read this far, you’re probably wondering how participants play golf on ice and snow. How could you find a golf ball if you miss the ice fairway and it bounces into the snow rough? The answer is golfers use tennis balls! The local contracting company, Glenn Session and Sons of Walden, donates a couple of bulldozers and operators who go out on the ice and plow fairways and greens. “We couldn’t make any money if we had to hire those guys,” Jim Dustin, tournament chairman, said.

Dustin encourages early registration. If you are interested in playing in the tournament, you can contact Dustin at 970-723-4404, and he will send you a registration form. It would be best if you registered as a threesome. Single players can be placed, but they wouldn’t be eligible for the awards unless they could be formed into a threesome.

“This is more fun than people can imagine. You see people cheering when they make a putt, telling stories about Jack Alcorn’s dog running off with their best drive (a hazard that has been fixed), and a player being disqualified for using a hockey stick. We’re actually developing a tradition. May be 100 years from now, we’ll be the St. Andrews of the ice golf circuit,” Dustin said.

Great fun on ice---call Jim at 970-723-4404 for more information and registration forms. It’s an annual event you won’t want to miss!
