Six million cards and key fobs on the street. Ninety-one participating co-ops. Forty-five premier national discount deals. The three-year old Co-op Connections member benefit card is associated with some big numbers these days, and thanks to a recently inked national discount deal, it’s now accepted at pharmacies in 48,000 retail locations nationwide. A partnership with New Benefits, a nationally recognized provider of non-insured healthcare benefits, allows Co-op Connections cardholders to save money on prescription drugs at thousands of pharmacies that participate with New Benefits. The benefit, while not a substitute for health insurance, helps make prescription drug coverage affordable for those without insurance. In some cases, the benefit may provide a deeper discount on a prescription than what’s available through insurance. Cardholders can compare the discounts offered through the New Benefits/Co-op Connections card on a variety of drugs using a chart that details costs. “The Co-op Connections card has added a significant benefit with this pharmacy discount,” said Jim Bausell, COO of Touchstone Energy Cooperatives. “With skyrocketing healthcare costs, the price of prescription drugs is an area that consumers really care about and need help with,” he added. To take advantage of the benefit, you must pick up your new Co-op Connections card at one of MPEI's offices in September and present it to participating pharmacies in retail locations such as Wal-Mart, CVS, Walgreens, Albertsons and Target. Locally-owned pharmacies can easily sign on to the New Benefits network to participate in the discount offering. In addition to the pharmacy discount, the Co-op Connections card has added several other national discounts to its well-rounded roster. Sheplers Western Wear, Barnes & Noble.com and Omaha Steaks are among the retailers that now offer savings through the Co-op Connections card.
