Power Blinks

What causes your VCR, microwave oven, PC and digital clocks to blink? Blinks are caused by short circuits on the power line that serves you. The culprit is often one of the following:

lightning, wind              small animals on power lines
› heavy snowload         › a car striking a power pole

Why Blinks Don't Usually Cause Power Outages
MPEI's electrical system is equipped with reclosure devices, which allow power to flow during a short circuit. It takes three consecutive short circuits to cause a power outage. MPEI's electrical system is designed to prevent extended outages.

To protect your sensitive electronic equipment from blinks, you may want to purchase an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and/or surge protection.
